Cardiff Comic Expo 2012

Yesterday I spent the day in Cardiff with my Dad, and got to Mercure Holland Hotel early for the 2nd annual Cardiff International Comic & Animation Expo. There were far more stands this year, ranging from new names in illustration and writing through to recognisable animators, which is one of the reasons I enjoy Cardiff’s Expo. There were also a couple of familiar faces from last year, not least Doctor Geof; creator of the most wonderful Steampunk stuff. Definitely our favourite stand of the day, we grabbed a few goodies, including some comics and a couple of cool embroidered patches. [...]

American Psycho

This month’s competition at Gwynfa Camera Club was to ‘illustrate a book title’, and I saw this as my chance to sneak some Lego into the mix and see what happened. The other members had been asking when some Lego would show up, as is my reputation, so I set to work. With a little bit of Minifigure frankenstein-type mixing and matching, some atmospheric lighting and a little blood added in photoshop I created… ‘American Psycho‘. The Letter Writers Alliance

There’s been a dry spell with the incoming Mail Art lately, so I was even more excited than usual to receive this rather awesomely decorated envelope from the Letter Writer’s Alliance.  Inside was a vintage style membership card and a badge to show the world that I’m not entirely consumed by email. I also got full access to the LWA members area, where there’s loads of great vintage letter writing stuff to download, and many things I would love to be able to afford right now! Totally inspiring.

Having a Stab at Book Binding

Today I had a go at Japanese Stab Book Binding. It’s something I’ve been meaning to try for a while, and I was surprised at how easy it was. Of course, it had to feature Lego. I used old Lego packaging (that I’d set aside for this very purpose) for the cover, and some note cards that have been in my drawer for literally 10 years as pages. Valentine from afar

Just over a week ago twitter friend D’Andhra Bascomb aka DE’BA Designs (@DANDHRA) put out a call offering a Valentines Card featuring one of her illustrations, and I jumped at the chance. She must have put it in the post rather speedily, as came all the way from Southern California and arrived this morning – perfect timing! Wood Carving Capers

The blokey and I have just returned home after our first time at woodcarving club, and I have to say it was awesome. Recommended to us by a friend at Camera Club, we decided to give Bridgend’s Woodcarving Club a go. We rolled up 20 minutes late having got stuck in roadworks and gone round in circles, before discovering we’d been given the wrong postcode! The Sun Shines! – My Shipshape Studio prize

Last Thursday I discovered that I was the lucky winner of Shipshape Studio’s first celebratory giveaway, celebrating the launch of their new shop. The prize that would soon be on its way to me was a copy of Pip Lincolne’s  Make Hey! While the Sun Shines. I’ve gone a bit tag mad. I’d been trying to get my hands on some good old fashioned brown luggage tags for a while, so when my Dad presented me with a packet full of the wondrous little blank canvases, I already had a few ideas in mind for them. As with most of my projects, they all changed direction during the process of actually making them, but I’m still pretty pleased with how they’ve turned out. Pegs (Plan B)

My original plan for today was to attend a christening, but that was wiped out by the ice rink that is our street. It was far too dangerous to attempt getting the car down the hill this morning, so we made The disappointing decision to stay in.
