Fusing

May 17, 2012 in Crafts

I’ve been having a little play about lately, fusing old plastic carrier bags together with an iron, and I have to say it’s rather addictive. With a supply of (free) bags I think I’d make sheets of the stuff! Using different colours and types of bags you can achieve different effects, and I especially like to include the type and branding from the bag’s original design. With enough layers, the final product  is a durable and flexible material that can be made into all sorts of things. I’ll definitely be exploring this a bit further! For now, these will be [...]

Arty Slides

March 11, 2012 in Crafts

May I announnce that I am the newly appointed ‘President of the UK’ on the Arty Slides International Network. Fanfare please! Its not as glamorous or in fact important as it sounds – I’m just representing the UK in the very international network. Of course the pressure is now on to actually create some arty slides and get them out there into the world! So to start my experimenting I got to work with an old Wonder Woman comic and lots of PVA glue. As often happens, I made it up as I went along, but I have to say I’m rather pleased with the outcome! These, along [...]

Having a Stab at Book Binding

February 15, 2012 in Crafts

Today I had a go at Japanese Stab Book Binding. It’s something I’ve been meaning to try for a while, and I was surprised at how easy it was. Of course, it had to feature Lego. I used old Lego packaging (that I’d set aside for this very purpose) for the cover, and some note cards that have been in my drawer for literally 10 years as pages. Some bright red thread to contrast the blue background and pick out the details in the logo and crowbar, some handmade rubber stamping on the pages, and voila. [Sorry for the rather [...]

Wood Carving Capers

February 13, 2012 in Crafts

The blokey and I have just returned home after our first time at woodcarving club, and I have to say it was awesome. Recommended to us by a friend at Camera Club, we decided to give Bridgend’s Woodcarving Club a go. We rolled up 20 minutes late having got stuck in roadworks and gone round in circles, before discovering we’d been given the wrong postcode! We got there eventually, though, and we’re soon shown around and got down to business. Once we got the hang of the chisels we were away, and the sanding was pretty therapeutic, if deadly to [...]

Tagged

February 7, 2012 in Crafts, Slideshow

I’ve gone a bit tag mad. I’d been trying to get my hands on some good old fashioned brown luggage tags for a while, so when my Dad presented me with a packet full of the wondrous little blank canvases, I already had a few ideas in mind for them. As with most of my projects, they all changed direction during the process of actually making them, but I’m still pretty pleased with how they’ve turned out. So far there are three very different tags on my workstation… The first is pretty grungy, really, which is a style I keep reverting back [...]

Pegs (Plan B)

February 5, 2012 in Crafts

My original plan for today was to attend a christening, but that was wiped out by the ice rink that is our street. It was far too dangerous to attempt getting the car down the hill this morning, so we made The disappointing decision to stay in. So, to make the best of the time now on my hands, I turned to Plan B: entertaining myself by decorating some pegs with Washi Tape. Very simple, but I’m really pleased with them, and I think I’ll be making some more to use in the studio. Time to expand my Washi Tape [...]

Wonder Pony

August 26, 2011 in Crafts, Slideshow

This is Wonder Pony, my latest project nearing completion. She still needs a few touch-ups, and is missing her lassoo (where did I put that superglue!?!), but otherwise you can see her here in all her fiddly, primary colour glory. I thought I’d put together a short blog to show how she came to be. Sorry for the quality of these shots – I only had my old iPhone ‘camera’ at the time. After getting my hands on an old My Little Pony on eBay for about a quid, I set about doing the one thing I never, EVER did [...]

Invitation Irritation

January 8, 2011 in Blog, Crafts

When I decided to make my own wedding invitations, I was totally confused and overwhelmed by the options available to me. There are so many styles of invitations out there that I had a new favourite every day. Eventually, though, I had to focus and come up with a design. I decided to use layers rather than a more traditional greeting card or fold-out design. The ceremony venue itself; Castell Coch, is limited in terms of the number of guests allowed – I can only have 30 people in the room max, including us, the best man and bridesmaids, the [...]
