The Letter Writers Alliance

February 21, 2012 in Mail Art

There’s been a dry spell with the incoming Mail Art lately, so I was even more excited than usual to receive this rather awesomely decorated envelope from the Letter Writer’s Alliance.  Inside was a vintage style membership card and a badge to show the world that I’m not entirely consumed by email. I also got full access to the LWA members area, where there’s loads of great vintage letter writing stuff to download, and many things I would love to be able to afford right now! Totally inspiring.

ABC – Get to know me

February 20, 2012 in Blog

This isn’t usually the type of thing I do, but as my network of Mail Art friends grows I’m finding that many need to know a little bit more about me, so that they can send me packages filled with things that I’ll love and enjoy. So, inspired by new friend Saylor Made, here’s a quick ABC about me… Age: 27 (almost 28!) Bed Size: Double Chore you hate: Hoovering the stairs Dogs: Not any more! One cat though. Essential start of your day: A big cup of tea Favourite Colour: Orange, Blue and Red Gold or silver: Silver Height: [...]

Having a Stab at Book Binding

February 15, 2012 in Crafts

Today I had a go at Japanese Stab Book Binding. It’s something I’ve been meaning to try for a while, and I was surprised at how easy it was. Of course, it had to feature Lego. I used old Lego packaging (that I’d set aside for this very purpose) for the cover, and some note cards that have been in my drawer for literally 10 years as pages. Some bright red thread to contrast the blue background and pick out the details in the logo and crowbar, some handmade rubber stamping on the pages, and voila. [Sorry for the rather [...]

Valentine from afar

February 14, 2012 in Mail Art

Just over a week ago twitter friend D’Andhra Bascomb aka DE’BA Designs (@DANDHRA) put out a call offering a Valentines Card featuring one of her illustrations, and I jumped at the chance. She must have put it in the post rather speedily, as came all the way from Southern California and arrived this morning – perfect timing! I’ll be putting something in the post to D’Andhra soon to say thank you.

Wood Carving Capers

February 13, 2012 in Crafts

The blokey and I have just returned home after our first time at woodcarving club, and I have to say it was awesome. Recommended to us by a friend at Camera Club, we decided to give Bridgend’s Woodcarving Club a go. We rolled up 20 minutes late having got stuck in roadworks and gone round in circles, before discovering we’d been given the wrong postcode! We got there eventually, though, and we’re soon shown around and got down to business. Once we got the hang of the chisels we were away, and the sanding was pretty therapeutic, if deadly to [...]

The Sun Shines! – My Shipshape Studio prize

February 10, 2012 in Blog, Slideshow

Last Thursday I discovered that I was the lucky winner of Shipshape Studio’s first celebratory giveaway, celebrating the launch of their new shop. The prize that would soon be on its way to me was a copy of Pip Lincolne’s  Make Hey! While the Sun Shines. I didn’t know much about the book, other than it’s packed full of crafty inspiration and projects, but as it’s worth £17.99, and the competition was open worldwide, I never expected I’d actually win, especially as the little rafflecopter widget tells me there were 99 entries. So when I received the email on Thursday, while in [...]

I’ve gone a bit tag mad. I’d been trying to get my hands on some good old fashioned brown luggage tags for a while, so when my Dad presented me with a packet full of the wondrous little blank canvases, I already had a few ideas in mind for them. As with most of my projects, they all changed direction during the process of actually making them, but I’m still pretty pleased with how they’ve turned out. So far there are three very different tags on my workstation… The first is pretty grungy, really, which is a style I keep reverting back [...]

Pegs (Plan B)

February 5, 2012 in Crafts

My original plan for today was to attend a christening, but that was wiped out by the ice rink that is our street. It was far too dangerous to attempt getting the car down the hill this morning, so we made The disappointing decision to stay in. So, to make the best of the time now on my hands, I turned to Plan B: entertaining myself by decorating some pegs with Washi Tape. Very simple, but I’m really pleased with them, and I think I’ll be making some more to use in the studio. Time to expand my Washi Tape [...]

PRD 2003

February 4, 2012 in Blog

After my A-levels I spent a year doing an art & design foundation course at GCADT (Glamorgan Centre of Art & Design Technology), during which we were told to keep a PRD, aka a Personal Reflective Diary. In my PRD I wrote about the projects I worked on, the artists I studied and the places I visited, with a few sketches thrown in along the way. This afternoon I found my PRD inside a long forgotten, buried box in my mum’s back room. Having spent the rest of the afternoon reading through it and marvelling at the effort I clearly [...]

Inside the Sketchbook

February 1, 2012 in Illustration

Those of you who followed my Thing a Day 2011 project will have seen many of the sketches hidden within my sketchbook, but I thought it would be nice to collect them all into one post. The theme definitely seems to be animals so far! …
