Mail Art Monday: Playing Catchup

March 19, 2012 in Mail Art, Slideshow

I missed my Mail Art Monday post last week because things were just too manic to be able to photograph and write as well as I wanted to, so this week I have quite a few incoming and outgoing pieces to share with you, and lots more still on their way to new homes around the world. OUTGOING Jeannine Saylor (@saylor_made), fellow disciple of ‘Mail Art Queen’ Jessica Gowling, kindly agreed to be Mail Art friends with me after I contacted her on twitter. Her parcel took so long to reach her that I believed it to be long lost and forgotten, but [...]

Arty Slides

March 11, 2012 in Crafts

May I announnce that I am the newly appointed ‘President of the UK’ on the Arty Slides International Network. Fanfare please! Its not as glamorous or in fact important as it sounds – I’m just representing the UK in the very international network. Of course the pressure is now on to actually create some arty slides and get them out there into the world! So to start my experimenting I got to work with an old Wonder Woman comic and lots of PVA glue. As often happens, I made it up as I went along, but I have to say I’m rather pleased with the outcome! These, along [...]

Mail Art Monday : New Friends

March 6, 2012 in Mail Art, Slideshow

OK, so I know it’s not Monday, but it was when I started to write this post! It’s been a very long, hot, fun-filled weekend for me (in Benalmadena for my cousin’s hen weekend!) but also totally exhausting, so it’s taken me a while to recover. So today is a very Monday sort of Tuesday, which is good enough for me! I’ve been a bit quiet on the Mail Art blogging front lately. That’s because I joined IUOMA (International Union of Mail-Artists) on the recommendation of new MA friend Tarah (@MissThundercat), and it’s filled my diary up even more than it already [...]

Cardiff Comic Expo 2012

February 26, 2012 in Blog

Yesterday I spent the day in Cardiff with my Dad, and got to Mercure Holland Hotel early for the 2nd annual Cardiff International Comic & Animation Expo. There were far more stands this year, ranging from new names in illustration and writing through to recognisable animators, which is one of the reasons I enjoy Cardiff’s Expo. There were also a couple of familiar faces from last year, not least Doctor Geof; creator of the most wonderful Steampunk stuff. Definitely our favourite stand of the day, we grabbed a few goodies, including some comics and a couple of cool embroidered patches. [...]

American Psycho

February 23, 2012 in Photography

This month’s competition at Gwynfa Camera Club was to ‘illustrate a book title’, and I saw this as my chance to sneak some Lego into the mix and see what happened. The other members had been asking when some Lego would show up, as is my reputation, so I set to work. With a little bit of Minifigure frankenstein-type mixing and matching, some atmospheric lighting and a little blood added in photoshop I created… ‘American Psycho‘. It was always going to be a gamble competition wise – you never really know what any given judge will like or how open [...]

The Letter Writers Alliance

February 21, 2012 in Mail Art

There’s been a dry spell with the incoming Mail Art lately, so I was even more excited than usual to receive this rather awesomely decorated envelope from the Letter Writer’s Alliance.  Inside was a vintage style membership card and a badge to show the world that I’m not entirely consumed by email. I also got full access to the LWA members area, where there’s loads of great vintage letter writing stuff to download, and many things I would love to be able to afford right now! Totally inspiring.

ABC – Get to know me

February 20, 2012 in Blog

This isn’t usually the type of thing I do, but as my network of Mail Art friends grows I’m finding that many need to know a little bit more about me, so that they can send me packages filled with things that I’ll love and enjoy. So, inspired by new friend Saylor Made, here’s a quick ABC about me… Age: 27 (almost 28!) Bed Size: Double Chore you hate: Hoovering the stairs Dogs: Not any more! One cat though. Essential start of your day: A big cup of tea Favourite Colour: Orange, Blue and Red Gold or silver: Silver Height: [...]

Having a Stab at Book Binding

February 15, 2012 in Crafts

Today I had a go at Japanese Stab Book Binding. It’s something I’ve been meaning to try for a while, and I was surprised at how easy it was. Of course, it had to feature Lego. I used old Lego packaging (that I’d set aside for this very purpose) for the cover, and some note cards that have been in my drawer for literally 10 years as pages. Some bright red thread to contrast the blue background and pick out the details in the logo and crowbar, some handmade rubber stamping on the pages, and voila. [Sorry for the rather [...]

Valentine from afar

February 14, 2012 in Mail Art

Just over a week ago twitter friend D’Andhra Bascomb aka DE’BA Designs (@DANDHRA) put out a call offering a Valentines Card featuring one of her illustrations, and I jumped at the chance. She must have put it in the post rather speedily, as came all the way from Southern California and arrived this morning – perfect timing! I’ll be putting something in the post to D’Andhra soon to say thank you.

Wood Carving Capers

February 13, 2012 in Crafts

The blokey and I have just returned home after our first time at woodcarving club, and I have to say it was awesome. Recommended to us by a friend at Camera Club, we decided to give Bridgend’s Woodcarving Club a go. We rolled up 20 minutes late having got stuck in roadworks and gone round in circles, before discovering we’d been given the wrong postcode! We got there eventually, though, and we’re soon shown around and got down to business. Once we got the hang of the chisels we were away, and the sanding was pretty therapeutic, if deadly to [...]
